Government officials, led by the Prime Minister, Head of the Administrative Coordination, Vicente Ehate Tomi, and numerous authorities.

The event began with the welcome speech by the city mayor, and continued with the awards to the representatives of the companies that participated in this project. They, in turn, read the construction company’s technical report.

-"The opening of this new international airport, the fifth in our country, is a new gateway to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea", said the Minister of Public Works and Infrastructures, John Nko Mbula, in his speech, "and marks a new milestone in the economic and social development of Equatorial Guinea". The Minister also said that the opening of Mongomeyen means the compliance with the recommendations of the Second National Economic Conference, in which the Government set as objectives the end of geographic isolation of some national areas such as Annobon, Corisco and the continental region.

For the Minister Fausto Abeso Fuma, the new airport is the best equipped, not only of Equatorial Guinea, but of Central Africa. He also said that in the upcoming days flights by national companies would begin.

For his part, the Head of State, Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, expressed his satisfaction in seeing this complicated work finished, which was inspired by the Government, and recalled the time when "they entered the jungle to look for a place that would serve to build an airport". He also recalled that many citizens, in the past, were killed in traffic accidents when travelling through the mainland, and that with the commissioning of the new runways, they could now do so on national and international flights.

The airport, in the opinion of the President of Equatorial Guinea, is "the great gift of independence of Equatorial Guinea", it is 3,000 meters in length and the runway is designed for relevant aircraft like the Boeing 747-400. It has three turning loops, an esplanade to park of over one hundred thousand square meters, an access road, drinking water supply, fire safety, new-generation navigation equipment, etc. The period of construction work was 72 months and the total cost, paid in full by the Government of Equatorial Guinea, surpassed the 190 billion CFA francs.
